The LMS Beyer, Garratt is a leviathan of freight haulage. These huge twin engine, single boiler steam locomotives were introduced in 1927 to reduce the London, Midland & Scottish Railway’s (LMS) reliance on double heading on its long distance coal trains.

This review is based on one model. The locomotive itself looks impressive and has a strong presence on the layout, but unfortunately I was very disappointed to find that some parts were broken and not attached when it was removed from the box.
Several small detail parts had come away, including a buffer, which should really have been securely fitted before dispatch in manufacture. For a boxed model, especially one with this level of detail, I would expect it to arrive complete and ready to use, rather than needing repairs or refitting straight away.
This is also a real concern because I have already pre-ordered two similar-design U1 locomotives: the LNER U1 - LNER Works Grey - 2395 - DCC Sound Fitted and the LNER U1 - LNER Lined Black - 2395 - DCC Sound Fitted. I really hope the quality control and packaging are improved on those releases, as loose parts straight out of the box do affect confidence.
Overall, it is a good-looking model with plenty of potential, but the detached parts and loose buffer on arrival are disappointing. Better quality control would make a big difference and this would have been a five star review, Come on Heljan and Accurascale. You can do better than this
