Detailed Description
Detailed Description
The British Railways Class 58 diesel locomotives were introduced in 1983 for heavy freight work. Built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Doncaster, they used a modular, bodiless design with removable engine and equipment rafts to simplify maintenance.
Powered by a Ruston-Paxman RK3 engine, they delivered 3,300 horsepower and became synonymous on MGR coal trains. Following freight sector reorganisation and the arrival of newer types, the Class 58s, then under the umbrella of EWS were withdrawn by 2002, many finding second lives overseas with private operators abroad.
