The MaK 650 D, introduced in 1957 by German manufacturer Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK), is an eight-axle diesel-hydraulic locomotive designed mainly for freight use on secondary and private railways. Developed from earlier shunting and light freight designs, it combined robust construction, high tractive effort, low operating costs, and smooth hydraulic transmission, making it ideal for shunting and secondary freight services.
With a top speed of 80km/h, 21 units were built for operators in Germany, Turkey and Denmark. In Denmark, the 650 D earned a strong reputation for reliability and versatility with private local railway operators.

Good Model Let Down by Poor Quality Control
This is the correct two-rail version for a standard DCC layout and the locomotive looks good. Unfortunately, several detail parts were already detached and rattling loose inside the box when it arrived. They do not appear to have been secured properly during assembly. A new model should arrive complete and undamaged, so this was very disappointing.
Heljan does not clearly explain the difference between its two-rail and three-rail versions. Three-rail models are labelled “AC digital” on the box but described online as “DCC Silent (AC)”. This two-rail version is described as “DCC Silent (DC)”. Nowhere does it simply state “two-rail” or “three-rail”, making the listings unnecessarily confusing and misleading.
Fortunately, this is the correct two-rail version and is a great-looking model. However, it arrived with detail parts detached and rattling inside the box, with some parts missing. Very disappointing.
