Class 17

Class 17

The British Railways Class 17, nicknamed the Clayton, was a lightweight diesel-electric Type 1 locomotive built in 1962–1965 for secondary duties. Designed by Clayton Equipment and constructed by Beyer, Peacock and Hawthorn Leslie, 117 were produced. They featured a distinctive low cab and central engine compartment. Unfortunately, the type proved unreliable, suffering from cooling problems and frequent engine failures. Poor availability meant they were unpopular with crews and depots. Withdrawals began as early as 1968, and the last examples were scrapped by 1971, making the class one of the shortest-lived on British Railways.
