The Class 55 was the ultimate expression of the 1955 Modernisation Plan. Replacing more than twice their number in steam locomotives, the 22 ‘Deltics’ became the undisputed champions of the race from London to Edinburgh. With their distinctive roar and unique "two-stroke" drone, they turned the East Coast Main Line into a high-speed corridor long before the age of the HST.
