LNER U1
Behold the king of the bank. The LNER Class U1 was a unique 2-8-0+0-8-2 Beyer-Garratt, commissioned specifically to conquer the formidable gradients of the Worsborough Bank. For 30 years, this 178-ton monster was the ultimate expression of British steam power, providing the muscle needed to push heavy coal trains over the Pennines. Our model celebrates the centenary of this articulated icon, capturing the awe-inspiring scale and complexity of the LNER’s only Garratt.
Pro-Tip: While famous for its work in South Yorkshire, the U1 also spent time on the legendary Lickey Incline. For a truly unique "Late Steam" scene, choose our version fitted with the high-intensity electric headlight used during its trials at Bromsgrove. It’s a fantastic way to show a prototype at the very end of its working life, pushing the heaviest trains in the West Midlands.
