The MaK G 1206, introduced in 1981 by German manufacturer Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK), became one of Europe’s most successful diesel-hydraulic locomotives. Developed from earlier shunting and light freight designs, it combined robust construction, high tractive effort, low operating costs, and smooth hydraulic transmission, making it ideal for shunting and secondary freight services.

Available with top speeds of 80 or 100 km/h, more than 300 were built for operators across Europe. After MaK’s locomotive business was acquired by Vossloh in 1998, production continued in updated forms. In Denmark, the G 1206 earned a strong reputation for reliability and versatility with private freight and infrastructure operators.
